Scarce One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Tree-of-Life Decoration, Inscribed "H. Lowndes / Manufacturer / Petersburg, Va", circa 1845, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated on one side with a brushed and slip-trailed "tree-of-life" motif and on the opposite side with a large slip-trailed Henry Lowndes signature. Desirable size. Some in-the-firing bloated spots, primarily to floral-decorated sides, some of which burst during the firing. A 7/8" base flake. One handle with a small chip and minor wear. Some minor wear to top edge of rim.
