Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Incised Bird Decoration, Stamped "C. BOYNTON / TROY", New York State origin, circa 1830, highly-ovoid jug with semi-squared spout and ribbed handle, decorated with an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a bird with turned head, perched on a branch. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Desirable maker, decoration, and form. Although this jug is impressed "3", it appears to be closer to four gallons in capacity. Excellent condition with a small chip to side of spout and some very minor, shallow in-the-firing chipping to edge of spout. Horizontal hairline to handle. A tiny base nick. A small piece of kiln furniture adhered to shoulder on reverse.
