Small-Sized Stoneware Jar with Boston, MA Advertising, Northeastern U.S. origin, 19th century, cylindrical jar with rounded shoulder and straight collar, the shoulder impressed with the cobalt-highlighted advertising, "BUTTER / FROM / JAMES.G.SWAN / NO 96 COMMERCIAL ST / BOSTON". James Gilchrist Swan (1818-1900) lived a colorful life with various careers from the East Coast to West Coast, including working as an oysterman, customs inspector, lawyer, judge, railroad promoter, ethnographer, and author. He spent much of his life living in and documenting life in the Washington Territory and the Northwest Indian tribes. This jar indicates Swan at one point owned some sort of general store in Boston. Small base chips. A shallow flake to interior of rim. H 7 1/2".
