Outstanding Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Incised Flying Eagle and Bird Motifs, probably CT origin, first quarter 19th century, ovoid jug with heavily-tooled spout, decorated with an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a flying eagle with stylized, striped shield across its chest. Decoration faces a second incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a bird perched on a flowering vine. Body of jug further decorated with haphazard sawtoothed coggling. Additional tooled accents to shoulder. Brushed cobalt-slip cross at lower handle terminal and additional highlights to top of handle and upper handle terminal. Unusual composition to decoration, incorporating two incised bird motifs--including an ever-desirable federal eagle design. A great, patriotic example of early American stoneware. Heavy chipping to base. Otherwise excellent condition. H 17".
