Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "WHITES UTICA NY", circa 1870, cylindrical crock with semi-rounded rim and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested bird with fan-shaped tail, perched on a leafy branch. Lightly-stamped with Whites Utica maker's mark above. Rim chips. Some spots of fry to cobalt. A thin 4 1/2" crack from rim on reverse. Some staining. A small chip and minor chip to right handle. Two minor chips to left handle. Minor base chips. Traces of reddish paint to surface. Some light staining.
