Scarce Five-Gallon Open-Handled Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Bird-and-Floral Decoration, Stamped "N. CLARK JR / ATHENS N Y", mid 19th century, cylindrical jar with tapered shoulder, squared rim with inset rim, and open strap handles, decorated with a large brushed design of a bird perched on a leafy branch, holding a large flower in its beak. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Unusual form. An approximately 6 1/2" sealed crack from rim with a network of tight surface lines emanating from it at shoulder. Two glazed-over rim chips on side of jar. One handle with a shallow in-the-firing contact mark and some faint surface lines. Rim area with additional short surface lines. Minor wear to inner rim for lid.
