Fine Six-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Bold Cobalt Bird-on-Log Decoration, Stamped "E. & L.P. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT", circa 1870, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested bird perched on well-detailed log. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Excellent size with strong color. The pairing of the plumed bird and sawed log, two classic motifs from this period of Norton family production, is unusual. Chips throughout rim. Minor exfoliation to front base area. More significant exfoliation to left side of crock and base of crock on reverse. A shallow chip to right handle. A few tiny in-the-firing iron pings to surface. An approximately 8 1/2" T-shaped crack at base on left side of crock, continuing several inches onto underside as a thin line. H 13 1/2".
