Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Double Bird Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT", circa 1855, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of crossed bird perched in the crook of a tree branch. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Excellent decoration and color. A curved line to base area on reverse, continuing approximately 4 3/4" onto underside. A few very minor in-the-firing flaws to surface. A 1 1/16" in-the-firing iron ping to interior shoulder area.
