Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Profuse Stenciled and Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Stenciled "FROM / J. LITTELL", Greensboro, PA, circa 1870, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and ribbed lug handles, decorated with an elaborate stenciled floral design surrounding the stenciled signature, "FROM / J. LITTELL" and a freehand "4" flanked by dashes. Shoulder and base with freehand straight and wavy stripe decorations. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Combining striped freehand elements with striking floral stenciling, this jar is the finest example of Littell stoneware that we have ever offered. Excellent condition with a faint 4 1/2" line from rim and some very minor wear to the end of one handle.
