Fine Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Impressed and Incised Floral Decoration, Manhattan, NY origin, probably Crolius Family, circa 1800, ovoid jug with footed base and heavily-tooled spout, decorated with an incised leafy stem culminating in a flower blossom composed of a series of impressed circles. The stem on this example is formed from a two-pronged stylus, creating an equal width through its length. Brushed cobalt highlights to decoration and handle terminals. Includes old wooden stopper. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. Lower handle terminal with an in-the-firing separation including an in-the-firing flake along separation. Crazing and in-the-firing contact marks to surface. Museum accession number on underside.
