Rare Two-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jug, Stamped "A. STATES", Stonington, CT origin, first quarter 19th century, ovoid jug with tall, narrow spout accented with tooled lines, and heavily-ribbed handle with dramatic, hand-formed gouging to the lower terminal, decorated with cobalt brushwork over the maker's mark and at the handle terminals. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. A 1 1/4" in-the-firing iron ping to reverse. Some additional minor iron pings to surface. Two small restored spout chips. A tiny nick to handle. A 1 1/8" area of wear to bottom edge.
