Five-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt "Indian Necklace" Motif, Stamped "J. EBERLY & BRO. / STRASBURG, VA", circa 1885, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with swag-and-floral motif resembling an Indian necklace. Impressed under one handle with J. Eberly & Bro. shield mark with star along with a five-gallon capacity mark. Slight warping to rim and one side. Shallow chips and a small piece of adhered clay to one handle. Two chips to opposite handle. Three chips to interior of rim. A tight crack on underside, extending 3 1/2" diagonally up base. A tight approximately 11 1/2" vertical line, a 3" Y-shaped line, and a 5 1/2" inverted Y-shaped line, all to same side.
