Fine Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Decoration, Stamped "H.C. SMITH / ALEXA / D.C", circa 1845, ovoid jar with heavily-tooled shoulder, squared rim, and applied tab handles, decorated around its circumference with a stem bearing flowers and graduated leaves. Shoulder decorated with a draped chainlink motif on front and reverse. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Excellent decoration. Very nice condition with minor chipping to rim and base and a 2" U-shaped line to base on front.
