Outstanding Five-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Owl Decoration, Akron, OH origin, circa 1875, cylindrical jug with tooled spout, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of an owl, featuring pointed feathered "horns", large eyes, and an anthropomorphic face. The body is composed with numerous spotted, dashed, and swirled trails of cobalt slip, further accented with incised highlights to the face, body, and tail. Incised legs and feet appear on the tail of the bird. Slip-trailed "5" above with dramatic scrolled base. An exceptional folk art rendering of an owl, and among the greatest Ohio figural designs that we have ever offered. Provenance: Ex-Paul Flack Collection. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with a few appealing "turkey droppings" (salt drips) to shoulder. H 18 3/4".
