Unusual Small-Sized Stoneware Butter Crock with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "JOHN BELL", Waynesboro, PA, circa 1840, cylindrical form with squared rim, footed base, and rare drooping tab handles, decorated on the front and reverse with two spotted tulip motifs emanating from a wavy stem. Impressed with "JOHN BELL" maker's mark below rim. The tab handles and style of tulip decoration on this crock indicate it is a particularly early example of John Bell stoneware, and likely among the earliest documented butter crocks by this important Shenandoah Valley regional potter. Three hairlines from rim, measuring 3", 2 3/4", and 1 3/4". Additionally, two very faint surface lines from rim, measuring 2" and 1", which are not visible on interior. A smooth shallow, chip to one handle, possibly in-the-firing. H 4 3/8" ; Diameter 6 7/8".
