Three-Gallon Lidded Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "SIPE, NICHOLS & CO. / Williamsport, Pa.", circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, flared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with boldly-brushed design of a leafy stem bearing a fan-shaped flower blossom. Light cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Includes salt-glazed stoneware lid, probably original to the jar. An approximately 6 1/2" inverted Y-shaped surface line under left handle, not visible on interior. An in-the-firing burn to base of decoration. A glazed-over base chip. Tiny nicks to inner rim for lid. Lid in excellent condition.
