Extremely Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Water Cooler with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "BURGER & LANG / ROCHESTER NY", circa 1875, ovoid form with tooled shoulder, squared rim, applied lug handles, and circular bunghole, decorated with a brushed and slip-trailed design of a flowering plant with central blossom, flanked by looping stems bearing leaves. Slip-trailed "3" to shoulder. Heavily-brushed cobalt highlight to maker's mark. Few Rochester, NY stoneware water coolers have survived, this example being the first that we have seen bearing the mark, "BURGER & LANG / ROCHESTER, NY", used during the George Lang's involvement in the family operation. This example features exceptional color and an unusual decoration for this maker. A shallow 1 3/4" in-the-firing flake to top of rim. A second, 1 3/8" flake to side of rim. A 1 1/8" flake to interior of rim. H 13 1/2".
