Four-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar, possibly Xerxes Prices, Sayreville, NJ, early 19th century, ovoid jar with heavily-tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and large semi-lunate handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a brushed drape or "fish scale" motif, accented with spots. Excellent, early form. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. Two large rim chips, measuring 1 5/8" and 1 3/4". A 2 1/2" in-the-firing flake to underside at edge. A few other base chips.
