Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Impressed Floral Decoration, possibly Josiah Chapman, Troy, NY, early 19th century, ovoid jug with footed base and tooled spout with rounded mouth, the shoulder decorated with a large impressed and cobalt-highlighted design of a flower blossom with scalloped petals and detailed leaves. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. The form of this jug is consistent with Albany area products, suggesting a Chapman/Troy origin as opposed to a New Jersey origin. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. In-the-firing, partially glazed-over line to base area on front. Three large base chips, one of which is glazed over. Significant restoration to reverse. An in-the-firing separation to interior of spout, not visible on exterior.
