Fine Two-Gallon Lidded Stoneware Jar with Incised Bird Decoration, Utica, NY origin, circa 1830, highly-ovoid jar with applied lug handles and flared collar, the front decorated with an artistic incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a bird with well-detailed wing and tail, perched on a vine bearing scallop-edged leaves. This jar features exemplary color, with bold cobalt slip set against a light clay background. The crisp, deftly-carved incising indicates a highly-skilled decorator familiar with this treatment. Includes 19th century salt-glazed stoneware lid, possibly original to the jar. A 6 1/4" crack from rim on front. Several rim chips. A few minor base chips. A few short vertical lines to base, not visible on interior. A few minor nicks to inner rim for lid. Chips to edge of lid.
