Rare and Fine Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Incised Bird Decoration, Stamped "PAUL : CUSHMANS", Albany, NY, early 19th century, ovoid jug with heavily-tooled spout, decorated with an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a bird with long, striped tail, above the large coggled signature, "PAUL : CUSHMANS". This jug is one of a relatively small number of marked Cushman pieces known featuring an incised bird design. It features one of the most-finely-turned spouts that we have seen on a piece of Albany stoneware. A large, wide crack extending from shoulder down right side of jug to underside. Two losses to bottom edge, measuring 3 1/4" and 2 1/8", both possibly in-the-firing. Additional heavy chipping to base. A few in-the-firing iron pings to surface.
