Rare Five-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Bird on Flowering Vine Decoration and "1874" Date, Stamped "W ROBERTS BINGHAMTON NY", 1874, large-sized jug with tooled spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested bird with spotted body, perched on a flowering vine. Additionally inscribed with the date "1874" below the bird motif. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. The cobalt date, as well as the size of this jug, are unusual. Provenance: From a recently-surfaced collection of Northeastern U.S. stoneware. Some fry to cobalt and staining to surface. Otherwise excellent condition.
