Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Foliate Decoration, Stamped Twice "ELIZTOWN / POTERY(sic)", Keen Pruden, Elizabethtown, NJ, circa 1832, ovoid jar with footed base, tooled shoulder, and applied lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a stylized foliate motif. Impressed on both sides with the rare, early Elizabethtown, NJ maker's mark, which reads, "ELIZTOWN / POTERY", with the second T in "POTTERY" omitted. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. A 4 3/4" area of in-the-firing salt residue to one side. An approximately 7" X-shaped hairline to one side. A 1 1/4" chip and small chip to interior of rim. A crack to end of one handle. A hairline to end of opposite handle. A few very minor base chips.
