Very Unusual Four-Gallon Slumped Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, attributed to the Thompson Pottery, Morgantown, WV, circa 1870, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, extruded handles, and semi-squared rim, decorated on the front with a looping, flowering vine in the Thompson style, applied between two stripes. Bottom half of jar with three Thompson-style flowers and a freehand "4", flanked by two additional flowers. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. This rare survivor partially collapsed under the weight of other pieces during the firing, but was spared from the waster pile. An interesting study piece with classic Morgantown decoration. Jar was misshapen during the firing. A 1 1/2" in-the-firing flake to handle. In-the-firing contact marks to surface.
