Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration and Molded Handles, attributed to the Thompson Pottery, Morgantown, WV, circa 1860, cylindrical jar with tooled accents to shoulder area, semi-rounded rim, and molded handles with relief floral motif, the front decorated with an elaborate vine design bearing four stems with pointed tulip blossoms and heavy leaves. Impressed on reverse with four-gallon Thompson Pottery capacity mark. The design on this jar is highly unusual in Thompson Pottery production and is based on designs used by the Boughner family of Greensboro, PA. This jar is among the finest floral-decorated jars from Morgantown that we have ever offered. Provenance: Recently found in New England. A tight Y-shaped crack across underside and 9 1/4" up one side under one handle, 1" up base on opposite side, and 2" up reverse, where it forms a Y. A glazed-over 1" iron ping to right handle. Staining to surface.
