Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Water Cooler with Cobalt Foliate Decoration, Stamped "SMITH & DAY, / MANUFACTURERS, / NORWALK, CON.", circa 1843-1847, ovoid form with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and circular bunghole, decorated on the shoulder with a stylized, split-stemmed foliate motif. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals and surrounding bunghole. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Exceptional form. Provenance: From a recently-surfaced NC collection, purchased by the consignor decades ago. Missing one handle. Water glass staining to surface. A minor chip to interior of rim.
