Scarce One-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Bowl with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "S. BELL & SON. / STRASBURG", VA origin, circa 1890, low-sided, semi-ovoid form with semi-squared rim and small tab handles, the surface dipped in whitish slip and decorated on the front and reverse with a swag and hanging flower motif. Shoulder stamped with "S. BELL & SON." maker's mark beside a one-and-a-half-gallon capacity mark. The semi-ovoid bowl form of this example is unusual for this maker, and is more typical of this pottery's redware production. Excellent condition with minor base wear. H 7" ; Diameter (across top) 11 3/8".
