Scarce Three-Gallon Open-Handled Stoneware Jar with Iron-Oxide Decoration, Stamped "W. STATES", Stonington, CT, circa 1811-1823, ovoid jar with footed base, tooled shoulder, flared collar, and open loop handles, decorated at the handle terminals with dark, brushed iron-oxide highlights. Upper half of jar with lighter dipped iron-oxide decoration. Featuring excellent potting and an appealing open-handled form, this jar is possibly the finest of the few William States stoneware pieces that we have ever offered. Heavy chips to base. A few small rim chips. A small piece of adhered clay to rim. A 1" in-the-firing chip below one handle. A few surface flakes near base on reverse.
