Rare One-Gallon Vertical-Handled Stoneware Jar with Impressed Decoration, Stamped "COMMERAWS / STONEWARE", Manhattan, NY origin, early 19th century, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, footed base, and open loop handles, decorated on the front and reverse with an impressed and cobalt-highlighted drape-and-tassel motif, above the maker's mark, "COMMERAWS / STONEWARE", used by African-American potter, Thomas Commeraw. Excellent form. Excellent condition with a shallow, varnished rim chip, and minor flaws, including a few minor base chips, two minuscule nicks to exterior of rim, a small chip to interior of rim, a tiny surface flake beside one handle.
