One-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Cobalt Floral Decoration and Tin Make-Do Handle, Stamped "F.H. COWDEN / HARRISBURG", PA origin, circa 1880, ovoid pitcher with tall collar, the front decorated with a horizontal tulip motif, the spout with brushed flower blossom. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals and maker's mark. Includes a 19th century tin make-do handle with scrolled terminals, each fastened through the wall of the pitcher with a screw and bolt. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, from a small New England collection consigned to this auction. A 1 5/8" chip to spout with 2" crack descending from it. A 1 1/4" rim chip on reverse. A 5/8" piece of adhered clay to rim on reverse. A minor rim chip on side of pitcher. Some light, scattered flaking to base. A base chip. A 1 3/4" crack to base. Some flaking to base area. Some fry to cobalt.
