Scarce Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Elaborate Incised Decoration, Manhattan, NY origin, early 19th century, ovoid jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with a large incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a flowering plant featuring a scalloped blossom flanked by leaves and graduated blossoms. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, from a fifty-year private collection. A 1 1/8" piece of adhered clay to shoulder. An 8" Y-shaped line ascending from base on reverse. Shallow chipping to base. Firing flaws to surface, typical of pieces of this age and origin.
