Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Incised Foliate Decoration, Manhattan, NY origin, early 19th century, highly-ovoid jar with footed base, tooled shoulder, and open loop handles, decorated on the front and reverse with an incised and cobalt-highlighted foliate design. Heavily-brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, from a fifty-year private collection. Rim and base chips. A recessed 4 1/2" in-the-firing contact mark near base on one side, and a 2 1/2" in-the-firing contact mark to opposite side. A 5 1/4" vertical surface line extending from base on side of jar, not visible on interior. Exfoliation to interior of rim.
