Three-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "J. NORTON & CO. / BENNINGTON VT", circa 1860, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested bird perched on a stylized branch. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. A faint 5" Y-shaped line on side of crock. Tacky staining to surface. A 1 1/4" rim chip to reverse. Smaller chips to interior of rim. A minor, 1 3/4" in-the-firing surface line to interior of rim, not visible on exterior.
