Rare Three-Gallon "Factory Second" Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, probably Manhattan, NY origin, early 19th century, squat-shaped, ovoid jar with footed base, flared rim, and open loop handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a large daisy blossom accented with spots. Cobalt bull's-eye decoration under each handle. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Interestingly, this jar includes a 1/2" wide in-the-firing crack on one side, making it impractical for storage use. However, it was not cast into the waster pile and has managed to survive to this day. Additional damage includes base chips, large in-the-firing flakes to underside at edge, and long, thin in-the-firing cracks emanating from the wide firing crack mentioned above.
