Scarce Five-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "LEWIS JONES / PITTSTON PA", circa 1890, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, the front decorated with a large floral design featuring a spitting tulip and graduated blossom. Light cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Strong decoration. Professional restoration to one handle. A minor, glazed-over dent to opposite handle. A salt drip to rim on side of jar. Small salt drips to reverse. One side of jar with an in-the-firing contact mark with small sliver of adhered clay. Some faint lines to surface, not visible on interior. A few minor surface flakes to shoulder. Some light exfoliation to top surface of rim.
