Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT.", circa 1855, cylindrical jug with tapered spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested bird perched on a stylized branch. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Provenance: Dr. Raymond L. Owen Collection. Significant restoration throughout surface and underside, including some touch-up to very tip of tail. Otherwise, the painted restoration does not touch decoration. Damage includes a thin unrestored crack extending through base of branch.
