Six-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Cobalt Quail Decoration, Stamped "J. BURGER JR / ROCHESTER, N.Y.", circa 1885, semi-ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, flared collar, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a quail with turned head, crest, and heavily-feathered body, perched on a flowering plant. Slip-trailed number "6" to right of maker's mark. Light cobalt highlight to maker's mark. A desirable John Burger, Jr. motif. Significant restoration to surface. This restoration does not include any painted touch-up to the cobalt. However, a varnish has been applied over the decoration. Some small flakes to cobalt. A rim chip on left side of churn. Two small chip to inner rim. H 20 1/2".
