Outstanding Five-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Decoration of a Dog Chasing a Man, Ohio origin, circa 1860, large-sized, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a folky brushed design of a running man with top hat, long hair, and raised arms, chased by a dog. Reverse decorated twice with a freehand number "5" flanked by three clusters of grapes. Underside with brushed inscription, "the 14". Wonderful subject matter with a playful charm about it, imbued with a strong sense of motion. The quality of this extremely rare design is enhanced by its size, as the central human figure measures an impressive 10 1/2" tall by 8" wide. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, consigned from the Southern U.S. A tight Y-shaped crack across underside, continuing onto base area on reverse. Two chips to each handle. Some in-the-firing chipping to bottom edge. H 13 1/8".
