Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Apple Butter Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG. PA", circa 1865, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, flattened rim, and applied handle, decorated with a brushed cobalt tulip extending from a leafy stem. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and handle terminals. A highly unusual form for this important Harrisburg maker. Excellent condition with a 1/2" hairline from rim on front and three in-the-firing contact marks around base. H 7" ; Diameter 7 3/8".
