Fine Six-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Large Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "NEW YORK / STONEWARE CO. / FORT EDWARD, N.Y.", circa 1875, semi-ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a bird with fan-shaped tail, perched on a leaf. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Exceptional color to churn and size to decoration, measuring an outstanding 12" long. Includes Albany-slip-glazed lid, impressed with a different six-gallon capacity mark. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, found in New Jersey. Excellent condition with several small chips to inner rim for lid. Lid with some small nicks and wear to edge. H (excluding lid) 18 3/8".
