Outstanding Six-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Large Cobalt Pheasant-on-Stump Decoration, Stamped "HAXSTUN, OTTMAN & CO. / FORT EDWARD, NY", circa 1875, large-sized, ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a pheasant with turned head and long tail, perched on a stump flanked by ground cover. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Exceptional size to decoration, measuring an impressive 13 3/4" tall. Includes Albany-slip-glazed lid, probably not original to the churn. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, found in New Jersey. Network of hairlines to right of decoration. A 3 1/4" vertical hairline at base on front, which forms a tight Y on underside. A 3 1/4" flake to rim on reverse. Two chips to one handle. Water glass staining to interior and some light water glass staining to exterior. Lid in excellent condition with two glazed-over surface lines. H (excluding lid) 18".
