Very Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Rabbit Decoration, Stamped "I. SEYMOUR & SON / TROY", New York State origin, circa 1840, squat-shaped jar with tooled shoulder, flared collar, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a seated rabbit flanked by scrolled trails. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Few rabbit decorations by the well-known, New York State potter, Israel Seymour, are known, and this example is the first we have ever offered. A 1 3/4" chip to rim on reverse. A 1" chip to one handle. A 2" hairline from rim on side of jar. Some faint hairlines on underside, continuing onto base in two places. An approximately 4 3/4" X-shaped hairline on reverse. Two small chips to interior of rim and a third chip to inner rim for lid. Minor nicks to inner rim for lid. A 1" minor, glazed-over dent to reverse.
