Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher with Cobalt Clover Decoration, Stamped "P. HERRMANN", Baltimore, MD origin, circa 1860, ovoid pitcher with tooled rim, decorated with a large two-stemmed clover plant design extending up the front. Spout flanked by cobalt swags. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Impressed below the spout with Peter Herrmann two-gallon maker's mark. Based on the form, size, and decoration on this pitcher, it easily ranks as one of the finest examples of Peter Herrmann stoneware we have ever offered. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. Very nice condition with a small spout chip, some shallow chipping along molding at base of collar, and some shallow chipping to base. H 13 1/4".
