Scarce Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Large Cobalt Leaf Decoration, Stamped "M. & T. MILLER / NEWPORT, PA.", circa 1870, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, flattened rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large design of a leaf, composed of numerous thick brush strokes, emanating from a curved stem. Brushed cobalt highlights to maker's mark and handle terminals. A desirable and visually-appealing Central Pennsylvania design, the most prized examples of which were produced at this shop. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor in the 1990s. Salt drip to front. A 1 1/2" in-the-firing chip to back end of right handle. H 11 1/2".
