Scarce Five-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Sardis, Ohio Advertising, Greensboro, PA origin, circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, featuring the stencilled cobalt advertising "GEO. BASS. DEALER IN / GENERAL / MERCHANDISE. / ONE PRICE ONLY. / SARDIS, OHIO.". Cobalt stripes and flourishes to shoulder. Base with freehand number 5 flanked by flourishes above two freehand stripes. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. This jar is the first example of Western Pennsylvania advertising stoneware we have seen including the interesting motto "ONE PRICE ONLY". Provenance" A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased decades ago, consigned from California. A tight Y-shaped line on underside, continuing 1" up base of jar. A chip to end of right handle. A minor chip to end of opposite handle. Some grease staining and old white paint residue. H 15 3/4".
