Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Incised Floral Decoration, Stamped "J. REMMEY / MANHATTAN-WELLS / NEW-YORK", circa 1810, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and open loop handles, decorated with an incised foliate design with overlying freehand cobalt foliate motif, both in the Manhattan style. Manganese highlights to maker's mark. Brushed manganese capacity designation, "1 1/2", under one handle. It also appears that the handle terminals are decorated in two different color slips, manganese and dark slip possibly produced from combining manganese and cobalt. The use of two or three different color slips on the same piece is unusual, as is the freehand brushwork superimposed over the incised design. One handle restored. Shallow base chips. Light wear to surface. Chipping to rim. Exfoliation to interior. Some faint, typical hairlines near base.
