Scarce Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Spotted Tulip Decoration, Stamped "F.J. CAIRE, / Huntington, / L.I.", New York State origin, circa 1854-1863, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, squared rim, and lug handles, decorated with a brushed design of two conjoined tulips with stylized, spotted stamens. Brushed number 3 and impressed three-gallon capacity mark below maker's mark. Rim chips. A Y-shaped crack extending across underside and onto body of jar in three places, the largest being a 5" crack on reverse. A faint Y-shaped surface line to shoulder on reverse, not visible on interior. Staining to surface, particularly heavy on right side and reverse of jar.
