Exceptional Quart-Sized Stoneware Canning Jar with Stenciled Cobalt Thistle Decoration, Stenciled "STAR POTTERY", Hamilton & Jones, Greensboro, PA, circa 1875, tapered jar with tooled shoulder and rounded wax sealer rim, decorated with a crisply-stenciled design of a thistle below the signature "STAR POTTERY". Freehand cobalt stripe below rim. Excellent decoration and size. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, acquired by the consignor's grandfather in the 1950s. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with a minuscule in-the-firing nick to base. H 6 7/8".
