Outstanding Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Decoration of a Gentleman's Bust, New York State origin, possibly Rochester, circa 1850, ovoid jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a gentleman's bust with hat, goatee, and distinctive tie around neck. Slip-trailed number 3 above. Excellent detail throughout decoration. The distinctive hatted profile probably represents a 17th century Dutchman in period garb, the jug possibly made as a commemorative piece referencing the Dutch colonization of New York. Relatively few stoneware human profile designs of this decorative quality are known. Very nice overall condition. A shallow 7/8" chip on top of spout. A second small, shallow chip on top of spout. An approximately 1 1/2" long x 1" tall, T-shaped hairline to left side of spout. H 15 1/2".
