Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Stenciled Cobalt Double-Bird Decoration, Stamped "J.C. WAELDE / NORTH BAY," New York State origin, circa 1855, cylindrical jar with tooled and rounded shoulder, lug handles, and squared rim, the front decorated with a heavily-sponged, stenciled design of two birds facing each other atop a sponged ground. Slip-trailed "2" at midsection with numerous dashes below, separating the birds. Brushed cobalt highlights to maker's mark. Excellent figural design by a desirable and very distinctive New York State maker. 5 1/2" hairline from rim on reverse. Otherwise excellent condition with a minor 3/4" in-the-firing line on interior of rim, not visible on exterior.
